Hospital Bag Checklist for Dads

Ryan Belcher

When my wife went into labor, I thought I was prepared. I was not. Here’s everything I wish someone had told me to pack — and what you can safely leave at home.

The essentials

  • Phone charger (long cable) — hospital outlets are always in the worst spot
  • Snacks — labor is long; vending machines are overpriced
  • Comfortable shoes — you’ll be on your feet more than you expect
  • Change of clothes — two days in the same shirt is a choice you’ll regret
  • Toiletries — toothbrush, deodorant, lip balm

For your partner

  • Lip balm and hair ties
  • Warm socks (hospitals are cold)
  • Their favorite pillow if there’s room
  • A printed birth plan copy

For the baby

Most hospitals provide diapers and wipes, but bring:

  • A going-home outfit (two sizes — newborns are unpredictable)
  • A car seat, installed and ready before you leave

What you don’t need

Skip the massive suitcase. You won’t need half of what parenting blogs suggest. Keep it simple, stay flexible, and focus on being present.

You’ve got this, dad.
